Best Sonic Youth Show You've Seen?

Mine would be the Academy in NY in 1995.
It was my first time seeing them and they
rocked. I didn't realize that they could
really play their complex songs live, I thought
some of it was studio stuff.

i would say mine was the international ballroom in atlanta with superchunk opening. i loved the show. it was circa 1991 or 1992,i can't recall the exact date cause i was into doing tons of lsd at the time..i was not on acid when i saw them though. i did hate that they played "the burning spear" and added an extra keyboard part. to meit though the entire song's feel off.
but i don't regret seeing them...

    Orpheum Theater, Boston, MA-October 22, 1994

They played with Helium. Long story short: I got contact high in the balcony and ripped my plush chair apart to "Diamond Sea" because Thurston was like "There are no security here. We can do whatever the fuck we want"

I still have the part of that chair that I wrote the name and date I saw them. I will have to scan it for this community.

ok, so here is my tale & a tale it is...
Back in Chi-town at the Vic ... Sonic Youth show (Vaguely recall if they played with Redd Kross?) back in '90 after 'Goo' release.
I went there with some friends from Ind. A friend of mine worked the door & got us in.
I had a slight buzz on... & was ready to rock out to one of my fav groups of all time.
My friend Di was more passive... I had Chi-town aggressiveness & snaked our way up to the front. I was behind one person about centerstage. (attempting a slow build up here)...
The third song in... they played Catholic Block... started to bounce around... (the song Jammed!!!) about half way through... some guy was surfin the crowd... wearing combat boots... I didn't see him comin I was so transfixed to the sound & group...
He decided to use the back of my head as a kick board to get more momentum above the crowd.
Bash! He had cracked me behind my left ear...
It felt a little tingly... a minute 1/2 second almost black out... I shook it off & kept on... "I got a catholic block (& got kicked in the head)... I got a catholic block..."
    Still rockin...
Another kick came... less than a minute later... He did it again... same boot, same head, same kick off... same spot even.
This time I went down on the guy in front of me. I only recall soft flannel on my way down. (the guy in front of me had a fuzzy flannel on.)
On the ground... I could feel multiple hands grasping at me... & faint traces of voices around the static of guitars... friends ... strangers... "is she ok???"
Then every went silent & I heard a voice... "Man, someones got to help that chick out..."
I thought... where's the chick... I gotta help her...
Then I felt myself lifted up... almost floating.

Reality: I was being lifted out of the crowd & onto the stage. They had stopped the show for me. It was Thurstons voice I had heard.
Then they took me backstage. I was still pretty out of it. But not so much to see Thurston come backstage to see if I was ok...
This was my only chance to ever connect with (I suppose) an idol of mine... I've never been one for autographs... but, a good story is somethin.
So instead of opening my buzzed & disoriented mouth to say something cool... I mustered a 'Thumbs up' ... "yea"... you rock.
Then as quickly as it all went down... he had gone back to doing what he does best. After a moment... I thought for sure someone might kick me out of the show... so they herded me out the side door back to the main floor... right as they opened the door for me..
My friend who worked there & got me in... was on the other side of the door... he said "Phyll... what Are you doing back there?"
I just smiled & slumped to the floor & was like, "there was a boot... & my head... &..." I couldn't speak after that...
He got me some water... my friends came back to find me..."Oh my God! They stopped the show for you!"
"there was a boot & my head" still floating in my thoughts.

What was even funnier was I sorta became infamous for a moment. Outside the Vic after the show... so many people were talking about me. (I had worn my customery Puss colored concert comfort clothes & Tall riding boots) Although people may not have thought it was me at first... it was funny to hear what they had to say... (& so many people were there from my home town)...

"Man, did you see that chick...? Yea, man ... she was like O D'ing or something..."

The rumors that nite were pretty thick... & I decided to not let on that it was me... but I will forever hold this story as my personal Autograph of the group.

'xscuse if the strory was long... but I felt it appropriate to mention it here of all places. My Sonic Youth nite in the sun....

Take care & hope someone got a laugh...

Warfield Theatre, late 1995 with The Amps and Bikini Kill.

The Amps were fuggingamazing. Back then, I had anger with Bikini Kill because I thought they took their feminism too far (to the point of man-hate), and I thought that was insensitive. They still put on a good show, though.

SY is pretty consistent. This show was the best because of the openers, not because of their performance. Then again, when I saw them in Summer 1995, it was right after seeing The Jesus Lizard, and the JL was the orgasm, and SY was the postcoital cigarette.

Best concert of my life - SY, Mudhoney, and Pavement on the shore of Lake Castaic near LA, some time back in '92. The stage was like 10 ft off the ground and Mark Arm jumped onto the crowd right on top of us during their oncore, then Curt Cobain came on stage before SY and performed "where did you sleep last night" solo acoustic. During the SY encore members of Nirvana, Mudhoney, and Gumball were all on stage playing anything they could find while Thurston interviewed people in the front row - it was totally unreal, a night I will never forget.

They were also really really good at ATP in Long Beach fall of '03. I've never seen them soooo tight and even with a 3rd guiartorist, a different type of show, but very cool nevertheless...

best one I've seen: opening for the Stooges at some arena outside Detroit rock city.

best one I've had a ticket for but couldn't get in cuz the motherfucker over-booked the room by 200+ people: GOO tour 1990 with Redd Kross at the Great Hall in Toronto.

their Sonic Nurse show here was pretty good. the room sucks (and they keep playing there) but the high points were high.
        "100%"
        'Silver Rocket'
'Sean Madonna and Me' - the last song of the night and it went on
forever. screaming fields of sonic love.
'Drunken Butterfly' and whichever other DIRTY song Kim sang.
        plus the Mariah Carey song.

they need someone to book them into a better venue with some acoustics.

2001/2002-ish at Summerstage in Central Park. Free too.

I'm a glass half-empty sort of guy--so I'll nominate the worst time for last year at Webster Hall--extended screeching sessions, and I was in the back and I'm short, and it was $45.

What was the worst time you've all seen? They can have some let-downs every so often.

My fav (and I've been to quite a few) would have to be when I saw them @ Illinois State University around '90, they opened for Neil Young, the crowd was a bunch of classic rock fans who hadn't heard of Sonic Youth. The crowd HATED them, everyone had their ears covered, booing, etc. SY (esp. Thurston) really thrived on it, and SY became even more provacative. Among many other things leaving a deafening high pitched feedback chirping for like 10 min, just to piss off the crowd. I was probably the only one in the arena cheering them on.

The worst I saw was around '93, SY seemed so rehearsed in their actions, and nothing seemed spontaneous, also Thurston, was frequently using a keyboard for sound effects throughout the show, it really pissed me off.

I think it was a Roxy show in Hollywood in I think '92. But then in '01 North Hampton MA they w/PJ of course by then deconstructed the fabric of time. It was like being in thier living room. Took me back to the small venues of the early 80's except now my friends belong in a symphony hall instead of a bar.
Some one mentioned the show in IV. Yikes that was a good show. It only happened once but it was magic***-
